Angola: Health Minister Appeals for Joint Efforts in Favour of Children

The Angolan Health minister, José Vieira Dias Van-Dúnen, on Saturday in Cabinda Province said that combined efforts of society will contribute to the betterment of Angolan children's situation.

The government official said so at the launching ceremony of the fourth phase of the national vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis, held in Chiweca Medical Centre, in the outskirts of Cabinda City.

He emphasised the role being played by the Angolan Executive in the eradication of this disease, which has been marked by the appearance of new cases brought from abroad, thus contaminating other children in this country.

He made an appeal to society in general to contribute so that every child gets the polio vaccine.

José Van-Dúnem also called on parents and adults raising children to take good care of then water they use, to acquire mosquito nets and do appropriate cleaning of rubbish, so as to avoid diseases like diarrhoea and malaria, thus contributing to the decrease of child mortality.

The fourth phase of the national vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis, which has the support of the US oil company Chevron and its associates in Block Zero exploration area, kicked off last Friday and is to end this Sunday.

The authorities intend to vaccinate about six million children under the age of five.
