Somalia: Women Activist Killed in Central Town

Mogadishu — Unknown gunmen, covering their faces with masks, have shot dead a female Somali official in central Somalia town later on Saturday, according to residents.

Duniyo Sheikh, my god soul rest in peace was IIDA women organization representative of Guriel town in central Somalia was gunned down ahead of the main mosque of the town as she was heading to her house in the town.

The incident was the latest in a series of fatal attacks on Somali government officials and aid workers.

Duniya is reminded her aid works she carried out in the towns of Dhusomareb, Guriel and Herale in the region.

The spate of kidnappings and killings in Somalia has hampered the work of aid agencies in the most-affected nation in the Horn of Africa country, where the UN says one of the world's worst humanitarian catastrophes is unfolding.

The Somalia womens organisation IIDA received a global award from the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) on 29 October in celebration of their 20th Anniversary in New York. The award was given to IIDA for using new ways to find peace in Somalia. Ms. Nasri Hussein Adam accepted the award on behalf of IIDA, presented by Julie Andrews, UNIFEM s Goodwill Ambassador. First Lady of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton joined the event by video and that time UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali delivered the opening speech at a special ceremony in the UNs Economic and Social Council Chamber.

IIDA was one of three recipients of the award worldwide, including womens groups from Peru and India. In addition to the promotion of women as peace ambassadors in Somalia, IIDA also provides housing, counseling, education, training and jobs for women displaced by war and victimized by violence and rape.
