Angola: U.S. Government Donates Usd 1.5 Million for Malaria Prevention and Control

24 October 2008

Luanda — The US government through its Agency for International Development (USAID), announced this Thursday, in Luanda, that it will make available USD 1.5 million to expand the coverage of malaria prevention and control in the affected communities, especially children below the age of five and pregnant women.

According to a document from the US Embassy in Angola, that ANGOP had access to, the amount will be used for three years by the NGO "Ajuda de Desenvolvimentos de Povo para Povo Angolano" (ADPP).

For three years, ADPP will support the activities of malaria prevention and treatment, covering about 100,000 people, including 25,000 pregnant women and small children in the northern Zaire Province.

The programme will increase the search for insecticide-treated mosquito nets and the treatment with Coartem, a therapy combined with artemisinin.

ADPP intends also to work with 200 primary school teachers to help families and communities of children in school age, with information, education, as well as NGOs and religious organisations to strengthen the connection between communities and health services.
