Zambia: Lusaka Bandit Gunned Down

27 October 2008

POLICE in the early hours of yesterday shot dead a suspected notorious criminal while four others managed to escape the dragnet.

The suspects, who are believed to be behind a spate of robberies, were spotted by police officers after a tip off from members of the public ferrying suspected stolen assorted goods from Kafue Road near Mike's Car Wash to Lusaka's Kamwala South.

Lusaka Province police commanding officer Greenwell Ng'uni, who confirmed the development yesterday, said one man was shot dead by police after an exchange of gunfire while four others who were armed with an AK-47 rifle managed to run away.

Mr Ng'uni said the incident, which occurred around 03:00 hours, happened after the criminals opened fire at the police, forcing them to shoot back and, in the process, shooting dead one suspect.

He said that police officers were tipped off by members of the public who were suspicious of them as they were ferrying of goods in the night, and paid tribute to the public for the support.

He said police recovered assorted goods, which included television sets, radio cassettes, hair dryers and generators, among other items, and said that the goods were suspected to have been stolen from different homes in Lusaka.

He said the goods were found hidden in a trench and that some houses where the goods were stolen from, had since been established.

The body of the deceased is lying in the University Teaching Hospital mortuary while a manhunt for the four suspects has since been launched.

Mr Ng'uni appealed to the public to report any suspicious-looking people to the police.

He said the police were on alert and warned that those found attempting to reap where they did not sow or disturb the peace the nation was enjoying would be dealt with as police were on alert to respond to any situation.
