Arusha — It is an irony that Mererani primary school located amidst the riches of tanzanite, a top notch gem, is in dire need of classrooms and teachers quarters. In order to function as a fully-ledged primary schools it needs 10 classrooms and 17 teachers quarters in addition of the existing buildings.

The school's head teacher Abraham Kissimbi explained during a recent graduation ceremony that the school which started in 1975 with 30 pupils now has some 1,400 children served by 25 teachers but the infrastructure is inadequate to support them.

He complained the school also lacked 133 desks and 32 toilet rooms.

Speaking at the ceremony, the school board Chairman Abubakary Madiwa asked the graduands to put the knowledge they have gained from the school to their advantage.

The official guest at the ceremony, the Mererani Police Post OCS Inspector Egifred Pius called on the parents to support the teachers in guiding the pupils and asked them to prepare a conducive environment for their children's learning by building infrastructure and facilities for both primary and secondary schools.

Pius said all change comes with challenges so people of Mererani have to stand up to the challenges if they are to prepare a bright future for their children.
