Nigeria: Northern Oligarchy Responsible for Niger Delta Woes-Asari Dokubo

Founder of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Alhaji Asari Dokubo has blamed the Niger Delta Problem on the evil machination of the Northern oligarchy, even as he regrets starting an arm struggle in the Niger Delta region against the Nigeria state.

Dokubo who fielded questions from newsmen shortly after the launch/ public presentation of a book written by Dr. Akpo Mudiaga-Odje "Niger Delta and the Politics of Oil", said the governors of the region had no right to manage the 13% oil derivation accruing to their various states.

Commending the states that have set up commissions to handle the development needs of their oil bearing communities, he said the governors of Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom states must also set up commissions that would manage the 13% oil derivation accruing to their states.

He reiterated that the 13% oil derivation should be given to the oil bearing communities to manage in accordance with the quantum of the oil they produce, adding that those people who fought for it were being marginalized.

He said some of them lost their lives and properties in the struggle and some others were maimed, adding that he went to prison for the struggle.

On the Sovereign National Conference, Dokubo said "those who do not allow peaceful change makes violent change inevitable", stressing that the conference would determine whether or not Nigerians should live together.

He said the Sovereign National Conference would afford Nigerians the opportunity of coming together to discuss the basis of their co-existence without harming one another.
