The Lagos State Government on Saturday reiterated the monthly environmental sanitation will still hold between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.In an interview with newsmen after monitoring Saturday's exercise in Somolu Local Government Area, the Deputy Governor, Mrs Adebisi Sosan, denied that the time has been extended.

"The government has not reviewed the time and when it does, it will inform residents of the state. The time still remains 7 a.m. to 10 a .m."Sosan said.

She appealed to security agents not to arrest anybody after 10 a.m. on every environmental day, stressing that she has received complaints of innocent people being arrested after 10 a.m.

"I have received complaints that the exercise has been extended to noon and security agencies are using that as an excuse to arrest people."

Sosan urged residents to tidy up their surroundings during the three-hour period that has been dedicated for the monthly sanitation.

She also directed the Ministry of the Environment to liaise with security agencies in the state to enforce sanitation laws on environmental sanitation days.

"From November 2008, any violator and youths found playing football during the exercise will be arrested and prosecuted according to the environmental laws of the state.

"Nobody is above the law in Lagos state and everybody must operate within the laws of the state", Sosan said.

She expressed displeasure with some members of the Oodua People's Congress (OPC) driving in a motorcade during the period on Ikorodu road , saying nobody was above the law.

"I will write their founder so that they will comply with the restriction of movement law during environmental sanitation days," she said.

The deputy governor frowned at youths playing football within the premises of St Paul 's (UNA) Nursery and Primary School, Somolu, during the exercise.

She directed the council's outgoing Executive Secretary, Mrs Iyabo Obasa and the Chairman-elect, Mr Omogbolahan Abiodun, to ensure that youths do not play games during sanitation periods.

Sosan appealed to chairmen-elect across the state to uphold high standards of environmental sanitation in their local government areas and ensure that blocked canals and drains are cleared.

She said more sanitary inspectors will be employed by the government to complement the efforts of those currently working in the local governments. (NAN)
