Nigeria: Govt Spends N55 Million for Malaria Drugs

Katsina — Katsina State government has concluded arrangments to distribute N55 million worth of anti-malaria drugs free to hospitals and Comprehensive Health Centres (CHC) in the state,In an effort to combat malaria.

The distribution, which has already started, is in line with the state government's free medical care services to malaria patients. Government is also offering free medical services to pregnant women, children under the age of five, accident victims and dialysis patients.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Abubakar Gidado, while addressing the state Governor, Ibrahim Shema, who inspected some of the drugs at the state medical store, said 70 per cent of the drugs had been distributed.

Gidado said the remianing 30 per cent would be issued based on request from hospitals and CHCs, adding that N40 million was released by the state government and N15 million by the 34 local government areas of the state for the drugs.

He said 19 general hospitals and 10 CHCs had received the drugs procured by the state government, while those by the councils were being distributed to clinics, dispensaries and maternal and child centres.Shema, however, directed that the balance should also be distributed to the health centres by Thursday, and promised to conduct another round of inspection to ensure that the directive was complied with.

He said the free medical services programme was part of the administration's responsibility to the people and pledged that it would do more in promoting the peoples' healthcare needs.
