Mozambique: Court Registrar Arrested for Corruption

27 October 2008

Maputo — A registrar in the Inhambane Provincial Court, in southern Mozambique, has been arrested and charged with corruption.

The registrar, Rafael Fernando, has been in the Inhambane top security jail since Friday, accused of taking a bribe to release a suspect illicitly.

Cited by Radio Mozambique, the Inhambane Chief Attorney, Mourao Baluce, confirmed the detention, and said there was strong evidence of the involvement of Fernando in acts of corruption.

"We are on the lookout for any acts of corruption", stressed Baluce, "and we appeal to citizens that whenever there are situations of this kind, they notify the authorities, so that we can restore dignity to the administration of justice".

The arrest of Fernando followed a series of investigations sparked off by a denunciation of his allegedly corrupt behaviour. It is the first time a senior law officer in Inhambane has been detained for such a crime.
