Angola: President Dos Santos Writes to Benin's Counterpart

27 October 2008

Luanda — The Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, sent a message to the president of Benin, Yaya Boni, whose content was not revealed.

The letter was delivered on Sunday by the Angolan Foreign minister, Assunção dos Anjos, during a meeting with the West African country's leader, on the sidelines of the extraordinary summit of African Peer Review Mechanism, held in Cotonou.

Addressing the summit, that took place from 25 to 26 of October in Cotonou, the Angolan official spoke with perspicacity about last 5 September legislative elections, held in Angola.

He affirmed that the legislative elections were a paradigmatic case and of positive reference, due to high turnout, as well as the orderly and peaceful way the whole electoral process took place.

The head of Angolan diplomacy also said that since the independence of African countries, the adhesion to democratic ideal has been progressing softly and variably, due to the political realities of each State.

According to Assunção dos Anjos, the natural evolution of African States has been supported by the African Union and the International Community, key factor for the consolidation and reinforcement of democratic push that has been registered in the continent.

The African Peer Review Mechanism is a programme of the African Union in the ambit of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), aiming at promoting good governance, democratic consolidation and Law-abiding State.

However, the Foreign minister, Assunção dos Anjos, left for Harare, Zimbabwe, where he will represent the Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, at the extraordinary summit of the Troika of SADC Political, Defence and Security Cooperation Organ.

The country's delegation comprises deputy minister of Territory Administration, Edeltrudes Costa, director for Africa and Middle East of the Foreign Ministry (MIREX), Nelson Cosme, Angola permanent representative to Ethiopia and African Union, Manuel Domingos Augusto.
