Botswana: Moloi Inspires Chiefs On Return

Mochudi Centre Chiefs overcame ECCO City Greens 3-1 in a Premier League game played at the UB Stadium on Saturday night.

After getting a 4-1 thumping from Township Rollers recently, the title-holders seem to have recovered their poise.

This was Chiefs' second consecutive win after beating Naughty Boys the previous weekend.

Despite the absence of influential midfielder Oteng Moalosi, Sekhana Koko and Elijah Phiriepa, Chiefs showed a lot of character. As expected, the return of captain Pontsho Moloi inspired up the Kgatleng giants. ECCO opened the scoring through captain Malepa 'Chippa' Bolelang early in the game but Magosi did not take long to reply through Moloi.

The game continued to swing from end to end with ECCO's Robert Tamba giving Chiefs' defence a torrid time. Time and again Chiefs' goalkeeper Noah Maposa was forced to come to the rescue.

The second half was another see-saw affair and to tilt the balance, Chiefs' stand-in coach Innocent Morapedi bought in Moemedi 'Jomo' Moatlhaping and Stanley Tsolope for Mpho 'Jomo' Mabogo and Derrick Ntumbayi. The move paid dividends as the substitutions got into the thick of things immediately earning Chiefs a penalty. Moatlhaping stepped up to beat ECCO goalkeeper Michael Onkutule to make it 2-1 lead.

Mamoja-diskie tried hard to get the equaliser but their efforts were thwarted by Chiefs' defence. On the stroke of full-time, Kekaetswe 'Mara' Moloi performed a trick in the box to allow Othusitse 'Jabu' Pilane to get a deserved third goal for Chiefs. Keaketswe Moloi had an impressive game for Chiefs in his first start for Magosi in a long time. He proved to the technical team that he deserves a regular place in the starting line-up.

Onkutule told Monitor Sport that they had a problem of concentration in the second half and they will rectify the problem in the next game. Chiefs' communications officer, Clifford Mogomotsi praised his side for the performance.

"If we have all our players available especially Pontsho (Moloi), I believe that we can compete and that is what we did. Pontsho is the captain, if the chips are down he can pick up the pieces. He has continued to show that he is not captain by default," he said.

Meanwhile, Great North Tigers (GNT) registered their first win of the season when they hammered Mogoditshane Fighters 4-1 in Francistown. Gaborone United (GU) were held to a goalless draw by Boteti Young Fighters in Orapa.
