Ghana: Volta Region Not the Preserve of Ndc

27 October 2008

The assertion that the Volta Region is the 'World Bank' of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in times of elections, has been debunked by the leadership of the Convention People's Party (CPP).

Discounting the claim during his two-day tour of the region, the party's leader, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, stressed that the region did not exclusively belong to the NDC.

He contended that between 1951 and 1956 the CPP enjoyed overwhelming support from the indigenes, who voted massively in elections during that period, for his party.

Dr. Nduom was addressing party faithful at Anyako in the Keta constituency. The first day of the tour took him to Tregui, Anloga, Dzelukope, Keta, Anyako and Abor, where he paid courtesy calls on the chiefs, and addressed party members and indigenes of the towns.

His first port of call was Tregui in the Anlo constituency, where he deplored the terrible nature of their road, and asked them to vote for him to enable his government construct the road.

He explained that the unmotorable nature of the road compelled him, and his entourage, to park their cars at the outskirts of the town, and use other means, albeit difficult, to come into town.

He also introduced the CPP parliamentary candidate for the Keta constituency, Mr. Kwashie Godwin Amelor. From Tregui, the CPP flagbearer and his campaign team visited Anloga, where he shook hands with market women and responded to cheers.

He later paid a courtesy call on the chief of the town, Togbe Afegbe II, to seek permission from him to campaign on his land, and also to ask for their support for his party. Later, in an address to party supporters and the inhabitants of the town, he entreated them to vote for the CPP, for real development to come to the town.

At Dzelukope, Dr. Nduom introduced the party's parliamentary candidate for the Keta constituency, Mr. Emanuel Dzidzeme Aidam, to the chief of the town, Togbe Dzelu V.

He also used the visit to open the party's new constituency office in the town.

He asked the people to examine the state of their pockets, and vote for the CPP to restore dignity, once again to them. Speaking in his native tongue, the CPP parliamentary candidate for the Keta constituency pointed out that the constituents were tired of armchair politics, and all the rhetorics of the NDC.

He stressed that the CPP was focused and determined to win the upcoming polls.

The campaign team of the CPP presidential candidate visited Anyako, the home town of the late K. A. Gbedemah, one of the founding fathers of the party, where they were led to the palace of the chief of the town, Togbe Dzordzeavudzi Atsrifo II, by excited party members.

Again Dr. Nduom opened the party's new office in the town, and urged the people of Keta to unite once again with his party, to win the forthcoming elections.

The CPP flagbearer rounded up his first day tour of the Anlo and Keta constituencies with a mini rally at Abor, where he addressed enthusiastic party members, who had been patiently waiting for him.

He said that it was regrettable that for the past 16 years, the Volta Region had been suffering in terms of development projects.

He called on them to vote for his party on December 7, for something different to happen in the region.

In the estimation of the CPP presidential candidate, Ghana would have serious problems, if either the NDC or the NPP wins, as the two parties had shown on several counts that they did not seek for the peace of the country.

He buttressed his fact by citing the numerous clashes between the two parties any time they crossed paths, some of which he recounted, were the Gushiegu and Tamale incidents.

On the second day, Dr. Nduom and his campaign team toured the Avenor-Ave and Ketu North constituencies, during which his campaign team visited Akatsi and Dzodze respectively.

At Akatsi, he introduced the party's parliamentary candidate for the Ave-Avenor constituency, Vincent Norgbedzi, to a gathering of party faithful, and asked them to support him. Whilst at Dzodze, in the Ketu North constituency, the CPP flagbearer was given an enthusiastic welcome by a large crowd of party members, who had been patiently waiting in the dark for many hours.

He introduced the party's parliamentary candidate for the constituency to the people, Mrs. Benedicta Yibor, and asked the crowd to support her candidacy, to enable her go to parliament.
