Lagos — Plateau State Commissioner of Information, Mr. Nuhu Gagara, at the weekend in Kano bemoaned the loss of the state's position as the nation's number one tourists' destination in recent years, describing the situation as worrisome.
Cagara told newsmen that it was lamentable that the state which used to be the first choice of tourists because of its good weather, serenity and other attractions, have lost the laurel over a period.
He said that accumulaton of wastes was among the chief factors responsible for the decline, adding that the government was making efforts to address it through the newly-created Ministry of Environment.
According to him, vehicles have been purchased and were now being used to evacuate refuge from the state capital, adding that street sweepers will also be employed to restore sanity to the streets.
"These measures, coupled with the current dualisation of roads within the Jos metropolis, are gradually restoring the beauty of the state capital," he said.
The commissioner however expressed delight over the prevailing peace and security in the state, which he attributed to the effofts of the present administration of Jimoh Dan Jang to broker peace and harmony among all people and communities.
Gagara noted that before the advent of the present administration, Plateau was like a "pariah"state because of the destruction of lives and property witnessed during a prolonged crisis.
