Nigeria: Commissioner Laments Plateau's Loss of Tourism Fame

28 October 2008

The Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Mr Nuhu Gagara, yesterday in Kano, bemoaned the loss of the state's position as the nation's number one tourist destination in recent years, describing the situation as worrisome.

Gagara told newsmen that it was lamentable that Plateau which used to be the first choice of tourists because of its good weather, serenity and other attractions, has lost the laurel over a period.

He said that accumulation of waste was among the chief factors responsible for the decline, hence the government was making efforts to address it through the newly-created Ministry of Environment.

According to him, vehicles have been purchased and are now being used to evacuate refuse from the state capital while street sweepers will also be employed to restore sanity to the streets.

"These measures, coupled with the current dualisation of roads within the Jos metropolis, are gradually restoring the beauty of the state capital," he said.

The commissioner, however, expressed delight over the prevailing peace and security in the state which he attributed to the efforts of the present administration to broker peace and harmony among all peoples and communities.

Gagara noted that before the advent of the present administration, Plateau state was like a "pariah" state because of the destruction of lives and property witnessed during a prolonged crisis.
