Ghana: MTN Unveils Training Centre

Committed to invest in its human resource capacity in its operational areas in the West, East and Central African (WECA) regions, telecommunications giant, Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN), over the weekend in Accra, unveiled a training centre to help train and upgrade the company's staff in order to meet future challenges.

Christened "MTN ACADEMY", the learning centre seeks to provide a learning methodology to its entire staff and also to provide a platform for the staff within the WECA region, to interact and share ideas for the progress of the company (MTN).

It would focus on the following competency areas namely -leadership, Management and behavioural skills, business acumen, technology systems and sales, marketing and customer service programmes.

Countries in the WECA region include Ghana, Cote d' Ivoire, Cameroun, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Liberia, Benin and Congo. The initiative would also be available in the Middle East and North Africa and South and East Africa to upgrade the skills of staff in those regions.

Services to be delivered by the academy include classroom session, graduate development programmes, participation in global accreditations, executive development sessions at international business schools, action learning assignments and e-learning.

The learning centre, which is located in Ghana is part of the company's (MTN) global initiative that focuses to build on the skills and expertise of various levels of its staff.

"It is specially important for us to keep our succession planning initiative running at full speed and that is the context in which this academy will create opportunities for Ghanaians, with very high levels of expertise to share their knowledge across the West and Central Africa footprint, and also to learn from other operating units in the region", noted Mawuena Dumor, Corporate Executive of MTN in an interview with paper at the launch of the academy.

Ghana, she noted, was chosen because of the enabling environment it has created for businesses to operate. With the establishment of the company in the Ghana, Mawuena Dumor believed that the future looks very bright because it was going to have a positive impact unto the future operations of the company. "That is the legacy MTN wants to leave", she added.

The Minister of Employment, Youth and Manpower Development, Nana Akomeah, who unveiled the training centre lauded MTN for the initiative to invest in their human resource power.

He said government would continue to deepen and enlarge an enabling environment so that the company (MTN) would continue to do its business in the country without any hindrance.
