Uganda: Makerere Gets Tough on Officials Over Fake Transcripts

Makerere — Makerere University Administration yesterday began investigations into loopholes in the verification of transcripts that saw officials certify a fake transcript as genuine.

The University's Acting Academic Registrar, Mr James Okello, confirmed that an investigation was underway but declined to explain its scope.

Sources at the Senate Building said the two officials in the verifying office, Mr Fredrick Kyazze and Ms Patience Mushengeza, were yesterday asked by the university administration to record statements. They have worked in the transcripts section for at least seven years.

The decision followed a Monday meeting involving member of the academic committee and yesterday's management meeting, in which some members of the management team demanded that the head of the transcript section be punished. Others called for the suspension of all staff involved with verification of the documents.

The acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Lillian Tibatemwa, declined to discuss the final position that the university management reached on the matter. Mr Kyazze and Ms Mushengeza could not be reached by press time.
