Nigeria: Challawa, Tiga Dams Potentials for Hydro Power - Experts

Kano — Technical experts and stakeholders on Lake Chad have called on the Federal Government to ensure adequate utilisation of both the Challawa Gorge and Tiga Dams, saying they are huge resource bases with great potentials for hydro power and tourism. Leader of the experts and stakeholders on the Basin, Dr Sule Yakubu Bassi made the disclosure in Kano while inspecting the two dams, a statement from the Kano office of Hadejia-Jama'are River Basin Development Authority, signed basin's public relation officer, Alhaji Umar G. Yarima has said.

Dr. Sule stated that adequate utilisation of the dams would apart from enhancing farming activities in Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Yobe and Bauchi States, also attract tourists from across the globe. Dr. Sule called on the Federal Government to provide adequate Typhagrass cutting machines to both Tiga and Challawa gorge dams, saying provision of such equipments would help address the menace of weeds that have been hampering free flow of water in the river system. He also stated that the tour afforded them the opportunity to correct unbalanced stories concerning the Lake Chad.

At the Hadejia-Jama'are River Basin Development Authority, the managing director, Engineer Sanusi Imran Abdullahi assured the experts of the basin's determination to release adequate water from both dams for the benefit of downstream users in the affected states. Engineer Sanusi explained that releasing adequate water from the two dams would enable thousands of farmers along the river course to grow variety of crops for both cash and food.

He expressed delight over the study tour, saying it would broaden the knowledge base of legislators, policy makers and relevant stakeholders on challenges and sustainable development of the Lake Chad basin.
