Angola: Govt Official Calls for Strictness in Accounts Rendering

Kuito — The minister of Territory Administration, Virgílio Ferreira de Fontes Pereira, on Tuesday urged, in Kuito city, southern Bié province, provincial governments to be stricter in rendering accounts of public fund under the management of municipal administrations.

The official was speaking at the ceremony of introducing the new governor of Bié province, Cândida Celeste da Silva, recently appointed by the Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos.

Virgílio de Fontes Pereira stressed that provincial government should be stricter and control the rendering of accounts of municipal administrations, included in the financial decentralisation programme, so as to guarantee greater transparency in the management of State funds.

The minister affirmed that 68 districts of the country were included, this year, in the municipal decentralisation programme, and each received USD five billion to implement social projects.

Bié province, he added, is covered by the programme with three districts, namely Kuito, Andulo and Kamacupa.

The official assured that next year the Angolan government will fund, through the same programme, USD five million for each of the country's 163 districts.

Fontes Pereira stressed that the project aims at easing the implementation of social programmes of each district, so as to contribute to the improvement of the population's socio-economic situation.

He explained that provincial governments, in partnership with Public Works departments, should intensify the supervision of projects, mainly of the construction and rehabilitation of social infrastructures.
