Angola: Public Works Deputy Minister Assures Conclusion of Stadium

Luanda — The stadium of Luanda province for the 2010 African Cup of Nations (CAN), being built at Camama area, shall be concluded within the deadline established by the Angolan government, assured on Tuesday here the deputy minister of Public Works, Joannes André.

Speaking to the press on the fringes of the visit by a team comprising members of the Ministries of Public Works, of Youth and Sports and of the Organising Committee (COCAN) to the local works, Joannes André pointed out October 2009 as the exact date for the conclusion of the undertaking, with the capacity for 50,000 spectators.

The official added that with a 18-month deadline, the infrastructure under the aegis of the Chinese contractor Shanghai Urban Construction Group Corporation (SUCG CN), and the foundations are being finished, whilst the ground floor will start being built in November, with the application of the stands.

To the deputy minister, with the progress of the works, dedication of workers and the great commitment of governmental authorities, the members of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) can be at ease because everything is being carried out for the stadium to be handed over within the targeted date to the sports sector of the Organising Committee of the African Cup of Nations (COCAN2010).

Concerning the constraints in clearing the materials and equipment from the customs, which, according to the Public Works official, delayed the works by around 30 days, Joannes André already revealed that they have been solved with the prompt intervention of governmental authorities.

At the site of the works, apart from Joanes André, the delegation comprising the deputy minister of Sports, Albino da Conceição, and by the executive director of COCAN, António Mangueira, met on closed doors with senior workers involved in the construction and the "Soenco" supervising firm.

Situated in the near the University Campus, in front of the future highway that links Benfica ward to the districts of Viana and Cacuaco, the infrastructures will also include presidential and VIP stands with over 2,000 seats, press room (200 seats), restaurants and other compartments.

After visiting the stadium at Camama area, COCAN will pay similar visits on Thursday in the provinces of Cabinda, Benguela and Huíla, which will also host next CAN's games.

On the other hand, the CAF delegation will visit Angola next November for the third time to assess the progress of the works of stadiums that will host CAN2010 matches and other structures of assistance. The agenda includes visits to training fields, health units and hotels, besides other infrastructures.
