Namibia: Frank for an Presidency

Former Namibian sprinter Frank Fredericks will challenge incumbent Athletics Namibia (AN) president Alpha Kangueehi for his seat at the forthcoming elective congress, scheduled for November 22 at Katima Mulilo.

AN Secretary General Mike Haimbodi said Kangueehi will stand for re-election to lead the athletics' body for the next four years.

Haimbodi said the Oshana Region nominated former Olympian Fredericks for the post, while he was also nominated by the Khomas Region for the position of vice-president.

The congress will see the election of four vice presidents.

The nominees are Adios Auchumeb, Erastus Shiyemba, Modestus Mwila, Alna Similo, Linus Domingu, Erwin Naimhwaka, Foibe Neliwa, George Mathel and Fredericks.

Haimbodi, who is also a nominee for the secretary general position, faces competition from Frank Slabbert, Naimhwaka and Charles Gordon.

The congress will also elect chairpersons for various positions.

Auchumeb is also nominated for the position of chairperson of track and field, facing Quinton-Steele Botes, who has also been nominated for the position of medics and doping chairperson, while Letu Hamhola is the sole nominee for development.

The nominees for the chairperson of officials are Betuel Karumendu and Acheson Hukununa, while the candidates for women's affairs are Neliwa and Gloria Abel.

Gordon and Richard Munika will contest the portfolio of road running, while the candidates for the cross-country position are Gotfried Tsowaseb, Dezi Endjala and Jolandi Diergaardt.

Vying for the selection committee are Frederick Bampton, Abraham So- !Oabeb and Naimhwaka, while the nominees for coaching are Seun Karupa and Sacky Mouton.

The candidates for Finance are Etuna Joshua and Justus Hausiku.

The nominees for the Veteran portfolio are Robert Mureni and Ben Lumponyani.

Haimbodi said eight regions affiliated to the AN will take part in the elective congress, slated for 09h00 at the Zambezi Lodge.
