Namibia: Spain Will Hold African Women Conference in Windhoek Next Year

30 October 2008

Windhoek — The Spanish Agency for International Development Co-operation (SAIDC) in Namibia will hold its fourth annual women conference under the theme 'Women for a Better World' in the capital in March next year.

Speaking to Nampa in an interview here last week, a SAIDC official here, Jesus Lasso, said although the dates of the conference have not yet been finalised, the proposed dates are from March 7 to 9, 2009.

He added that around 350 women ministers and prominent women around Africa including Namibia will attend the conference.

He explained that the aim of the conference is to promote the agenda of gender equality and women empowerment all over the world, but starting in Africa.

The first women conference was held in 2006 in Maputo, Mozambique, the second was held in 2007 in Madrid, Spain while the third was held this year in Niamey, Niger.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Marlene Mungunda, who on 22 September this year spoke at an inception workshop in the capital, of a Joint Programme on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, said women in Namibia continue to experience gender inequalities in different spheres of life.

She said of great concern are the issues of low status and lack of opportunities for women and adolescent girls, gender-based violence, the multiple impacts of HIV-AIDS on women and girls as well as low representation of women in decision making.
