Namibia: Walvis Bay Primary Too Smart in Mind Games

30 October 2008

Windhoek — Learners from Walvis Bay Primary School dominated the Chess Prodigy Tournament as the youngsters unleashed their full intellectual capacity to scoop everything on offer at the coastal tourney last weekend.

Ten-year old Duane Feris defied his tender age as the toddler put up a faultless display with six wins out of six attempts, leaving Theo Sager and Daniel Jansen in second and third places respectively.

Nadia Liebenberg was undoubtedly the best achiever in the girls division with a total haul of 3.5 points.

Eight-year old grade two learner Ethin Feris almost stole the limelight but had to play second fiddle to his elder brother and eventual winner Duane with the younger Ethin having to be satisfied with an overall fourth place on four points.

The tournament that attracted a significant number of schools from around the harbour enclave was organized by Zandell Chess Academy.

Close to thirty learners from the Walvis Bay, Duinesig and Duneside Combined primary schools tried their hand in the first ever chess tournament for youngsters in the Erongo Region.
