Eritrea: Minister Participates in Workshop On Combating Urban Pollution

Asmara — The Minister of Land, Water and Environment, Mr. Woldenkiel Gebremariam, participated in a workshop on combating urban pollution that was held in Nairobi, Kenya, from October 21 to 22.

The workshop in which East African countries took part at the ministerial level focused on management of industry and mineral related air pollution, domestic air pollution, and reduction of air pollution resulting from the means of transport, especially cars, among others. Moreover, discussion on city planning and administration, global air pollution, as well as master plan for cities was conducted at the workshop.

The participants adopted a number of resolutions and recommendations, including the need to upgrade factories that cause pollution, stop the burning of garbage on the part of municipalities and exert efforts to modify cars into becoming environment-friendly. Eritrea and Uganda were cited at the workshop as setting good example for prohibiting the import of cars above 5 years of service.
