Nigeria: Water Scarcity - Council to Construct 110 Boreholes in Kano

Kano — Determined to improve water and sanitation within Kano metropolis, the chairman of Ungogo Local Government Council, Alhaji Badaru Umar, said 110 boreholes will be constructed in all the 11 wards of the area.

Alhaji Badaru Umar stated that to realise this objective, his council has bought a heavy-duty equipment for the construction of the boreholes through direct labour. Although he did not say how much the project will cost, the chairman said all communities in the area will be provided with potable water as a way to prevent disease outbreak in the council.

The chairman who was laying a foundation of a 2-kilometer road and launch of borehole drilling machine at Gayawa ward, Monday, disclosed that the era of untold hardship due to lack of water will soon be over in the council. Badaru said his council is poised to provide road networks as part of the complementary role to enhance social amenities in the state. In his speech at the occasion, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa, expressed appreciatioon over the peaceful political climate in the area. He commended the council chairman for his efforts to develop the council in the short period he has become it helmsman.
