Somalia: Somaliland Police Search for Clues After Terror Attacks

30 October 2008

Authorities in Somalia's breakaway northern republic of Somaliland are searching for clues following Wednesday's triple suicide attacks that killed at least 23 people, Radio Garowe reported.

More than 35 people were wounded in the separatist region's capital, Hargeisa, after suicide bombers struck the presidential palace, the UNDP office and the Ethiopian trade office. Full story

On Thursday, the dead bodies of two Ethiopian nationals were transported back to their home country.

Abdullahi "Irro" Ismail, Somaliland's internal affairs minister, told reporters on Thursday that local police were still searching for clues amongst the wreckage.

He linked the suicide bombings to explosions in April that rocked the parliament building in Somaliland, a relatively peaceful sub-state in Somalia's northwest.

Mr. Irro said police had captured suspects, but did not provide a number. He also stated that the some of the suspects were "from south Somalia," where Islamist-led insurgents are battling Ethiopian-backed government forces.

"They were in Hargeisa for about one week," said Somaliland's interior minister, while indicating that police were searching the suspects' rented home for more evidence.

Security was tightened in and around Hargeisa with hundreds of government soldiers patrolling city streets and setting up security checkpoints, where vehicles were searched.
