Gabon: Council Suspends Two Satirical Weeklies

30 October 2008

press release

The National Council for Communication (CNC) yesterday suspended two privately-owned weeklies, Le Scribouillard and Le Mbandja, for one and two months respectively for using satirical terms to refer to certain government ministers.

The CNC accused the newspapers of "recidivism and insubordination" as it already warned them on 16 October. It said the communication law banned referring to ministers by nicknames.
