Uganda: Minister Attacks Road Contractors

Kampala — Contractors who rehabilitated the Isingiro-Kikagate Road made it too narrow, the animal industry state minister has said.

Maj. Bright Rwamirama said the road does not have an adequate drainage system, adding that when it rains, water floods, making the road impassable.

"The road is getting spoilt because it was poorly done. The contractors used substandard marram mixed with sand and mud," Rwamirama said on Monday after over 20 vehicles were caught in the floods at Kirumba in Kabingo sub-county.

The minister, who was going to Bukanga, was delayed for five hours.

Rwamirama appealed to the works ministry to fix the road, saying people's businesses had been blocked, especially those dealing in transportation.

He said the road is used by heavy trucks, which require quality marram.

According to the 2008/09 budget, the road will be tarmacked in 2009/10.
