Kampala — The Government will no longer pay the electricity and water bills for its technical, business, education and vocational training institutes.
The assistant commissioner in charge of technical education, Manssoor Illahi, said the bills would be paid by the particular institutions.
"We have realised that many institutes have been misusing these services, yet these utilities are expensive," he said.
Manssoor was on Monday presiding over the 10th graduation ceremony for St. Kizito Technical School Kitovu in Masaka district.
He said the July 2008 BTV Bill made the decision and urged all government-funded institutions to be careful when using electricity and water.
Mansoor said institution grants would, therefore, be reduced, adding that the Government income had also decreased.
A total of 78 students were awarded certificates in carpentry, plumbing, building, motor vehicle mechanics and metal fabrication.
Manssoor cautioned the graduand against undermining jobs.
"I hope that after here, you will start your own jobs and employ others. It is a chance for you to become an expert at something," he said.
He advised the graduand not to be contented with their certificates but to go for further studies.
Manssoor appealed to the parents to motivate their children by giving them proper guidance and school requirements for them to succeed in their studies.
The school's director, Br. Dan Tibyanje, said the school had over 350 government-sponsored students.
He called for more funding from the Government to sustain the institution.
Tibyanje said the school's biggest challenge was paying salaries to its private teachers.
The services these teachers provided, he said, were vital to the students.
