Zambia: Candidates in Tight Race

Initial results obtained last night showed that MMD candidate, Rupiah Banda, Patriotic Front leader, Michael Sata and United Party for National Development's Hakainde Hichilema were in a tight race in an election characterised by low turn out.

According to results obtained by 22:00 hours last night from Solwezi, Mr Banda polled 205, Mr Hichilema 48, General Miyanda one and Mr Sata seven at Mbonge polling station.

At Kapijimpanga polling station Mr Banda got 181, Mr Hichilema 11, Gen Miyanda two and Mr Sata 13.

At Kyafukuma polling station, Mr Banda polled 410, Mr Hichilema 83, Gen Miyanda six and Mr Sata 27.

At Kansanshi, Mr Banda obtained 99 , Mr Hichilema 79, Gen Miyanda two and Mr Sata 240.

At Kazhibu, Mr Banda got 120, Gen Miyanda nil, Mr Sata eight and Mr Hichilema 10.

At Kyalalankoba, Mr Banda got 184 , Mr Hichilema 41 , Gen Miyanda one and Mr Sata 23.

At Kimakolwe, Mr Banda got 160, Mr Hichilema 35, Gen Miyanda one, and Mr Sata 20.

At Sandangombe, Mr Banda got 160, Mr Hichilema 18, Gen Miyanda one, Mr Sata nine, and one rejected ballot.

At Mitukutuku, Mr Banda had 214, Mr Hichilema 28, Gen Miyanda two, Mr Sata 11 and three ballots were rejected.

At Zacts, Mr Banda polled 130, Mr Hichilema 17, Gen Miyanda nil , and Mr Sata five.

In Western Province , results in Mongu, which started pouring in last night, showed that the MMD candidate was leading in four polling stations.

At Boma polling station, Mr Banda polled 247 votes while Mr Sata trailed with 139 votes.

Mr Hichilema got 71, Gen Miyanda got four, while six ballot papers were spoiled.

At Limulunga West polling station, Mr Banda polled 521, Mr Sata 63, Mr Hichilema 59, and Gen Miyanda had three votes.

Mr Banda got 385 at Imwiko polling station, followed by Mr Sata with 193, Mr Hichilema got 63, while Gen Miyanda got five.

At Mulambwa, Mr Banda got 101, the PF leader 52, Mr Hichilema got 27, and Gen Miyanda two.

At Limulunga East, Mr Banda got 503, Mr Sata 99, Mr Hichilema 84, while Gen Miyanda got three.

In Southern Province, the UPND candidate took an early lead in the poll results obtained from Livingstone.

Mr Hichilema was leading in results obtained from six polling stations while at some other stations, results were not ready by Press time.

At Dambwa B polling station, Mr Hichilema polled 228 votes while Mr Banda polled 164 votes. Mr Sata got 151 votes whileGen Miyanda polled three votes and one vote was spoiled.

At Dambwa Central polling station, only 313 voted out of the 651 registered voters.

Mr Hichilema got 125 votes, Mr Banda 104 votes, Mr Sata 83 and Gen Miyanda got nil. One ballot paper was spoiled.

At Syanalumba polling station, Mr Hichilema polled 111 votes while Mr Banda polled 90. Mr Sata had 50 votes while Gen Miyanda polled seven and one vote was spoiled.

At Dr Mubitana Ward, Mr Hichilema polled 277 votes, Mr Banda got 199 votes, Mr Sata got 241 votes, Gen Miyanda got nine, with five of the votes spoiled.

At Mosi-oa-Tunya polling station, Mr Hichilema polled 86 while Mr Banda polled 77 with Mr Sata having 72 votes. Gen Miyanda got one vote while one vot e was rejected.

And at Bible College polling station, Mr Hichilema got 92 votes, Mr Banda 41, Mr Sata 32 and Gen Miyanda had two votes.

A total of 168 people voted at that polling station and one vote was rejected

In Lusaka, Mr Sata was leading at Sikanze West polling station with 344, followed by Mr Banda's 87, while Mr Hichilema polled 77 and Gen Miyanda got one vote.

At Raphael Kombe, Mr Sata polled 204, followed by the MMD candidate who got 71, while Mr Hichilema got 64 and Gen Miyanda polled none.

Mr Sata got 615 at Chimbokaila polling station, Mr Hichilema 237, Mr Banda 162 and Gen Miyanda 13 votes.

At Independence polling station, Mr Sata polled 314, Mr Banda 171, while Mr Hichilema got 93 votes. Gen Miyanda got five.

At Munkunta polling station, Mr Sata got 247 while Mr Banda trailed at 123. Mr Hichilema got three and Gen Miyanda had one vote.

Mr Sata was leading at Chinsenta with 225 votes followed by Mr Banda who got 23, Gen Miyanda polled one while Mr Hichilema got zero.

At Ntulo polling station, the PF leader got 319, Mr Banda 60, Mr Hichilema two and Gen Miyanda one.

At Mbereshi, Mr Sata got 107, Mr Banda 90, while Mr Hichilema and Gen Miyanda got three each.

By Press time, counting was still going on in various parts of the country.
