Kenya: Tension As Officer Killed

Nairobi — Tension is high among members of two communities in Narok South District following the killing of a General Service Unit officer on Sunday.

The incident sparked a row between the communities before several houses were burnt in Ololung'a. Members of the Abagusii community were on Thursday leaving the area after being given a five-day ultimatum by the Maasai.

The Narok police boss Patrick Wambani said the victim operated a motorcycle business.

He was on a mission to collect proceeds from the business when he was attacked. Mr Wambani said that the money given to the officer seemed not enough and an argument ensued.

He said the employee, accompanied by several young men from his community, then engaged the officer in a scuffle before stabbing him with a knife.

Members of the Maasai community went on the rampage and started burning houses belonging to the Abagusii. Mr Wambani said the suspects had been arrested.

He was killed after fighting broke out between pastoralists and farmers over grazing land. Area police boss Willy Lugusa said the arrest followed a tip-off by members of the public.

In another case, a 28-year-old man was on Thursday stoned to death by residents who accused him of killing his wife at Kiawara slums in Nyeri South District.

Mr John Ndung'u had reportedly been released the same day by a Nyeri magistrate on a Sh1,500 fine for assaulting a fellow villager.
