Nigeria: Government, Italian Company Sign N2.5 Billion MoU on Tannery

Katsina — Katsina State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) valued at over N2.5 billion with an Italian firm, for revitalisation of the Daura Tannery.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the state government, by Managing Director of Katsina Investment and Property Development Company (KIPDECO), Alhaji Bashir Giddado, Executive Director, STR Engineering, Mr Vittorio Sortor, signed for the firm, while the Katsina State Attorney General, Alhaji Abdullahi Garba Faskari, endorsed the agreement as a witness.

Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, the state Governor, Ibrahim Shema, said the MoU is the first of Public Private Partnership (PPP) ventures entered into by the state administration with a private firm, a project which is of huge economic benefit to the state.

Shema said the state government is interested in taking more equity shares at the tannery and assured the firm of government's support and assistance to ensure the success of the tannery for the benefit of the people of Daura and the state in general.

Also speaking, the consultant handling the project, Alhaji Sabo Bello Ingawa, said revitalisation of the tannery project would cost between N2.5 billion and N3 billion when completed, adding that the project is expected to be completed before the end of March 2009, and would process 9, 000 sheep and goat skins daily, while 350 people would be provided with formal jobs.
