Freetown — Students, lecturers and staff of Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone (USL) were delighted on Wednesday after they received a huge donation from the Zain mobile phone company at the college ground.

The country's leading mobile phone company donated a 40,000 liter water tank and 200 mattresses to the college.

Zain's managing director; Ted Sauti Phiri said the donation was done to demonstrate the company's continued support to education.

He said Zain is committed to economic and social development in the country, adding that the mobile phone network is passionate about the communities in which they operate.

He said that this was not the first time the company has supported education in the country, noting that last year, a total of $50,000 was given to underprivileged secondary schools through their 'Build our Nation' promotions.

The college acting deputy vice chancellor, Dr. Dan Foday said the donation was a surprise to the college as water was a perennial problem in the college.

He said because of the ongoing rehabilitation process in the college hostels, the university was unable to accommodate students this year.

Dr. Foday said the existing relationship between the college and mobile phone company has been satisfactory and went on thanking the company for the donations and hope the positive relationship would continue.

The college student union president, Alhaji Komeh thanked the mobile phone company for coming to their aid, and promised the donated items would be used for its intended purpose.
