Freetown — The Director of Sports, Bai Kabia has said sports are suffering in the country due to negligency ranging from the sports council to dishonesty in the selection of athletes.
Kabia, who was addressing the parliamentary oversight committee on Education, youth and sports, said since the 1964 act of parliament that formed the National Sports Council (NSC) it has not been revisited.
He said some rules are no longer standing presently as he quickly referred parliament to the provision of the chairman who was the prime minister.
Also the act initially centered on five disciplines, but now the act has to deal with many different sports associations.
Bai Kabia spoke strongly on the need to control the creation of new associations and called on parliament to support the rebuilding and improvement of the national NSC.
On the poor performance of Leone Stars, the director noted that a strong home based team would salvage the situation in the near future.
He said that there is problem of coordination between his office and the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA).
Bai Kabia also revealed that the dishonesty in the selection of players to the junior national team is another factor, noting that athlete over 20yrs are selected to the junior side, which affects the national team.
In his advice, he said the only solution is to go back to the drawing board and prepare well for the modern trend.
