Copenhagen — Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Friday that he is confident in the political influence wielded by Mozambican President Armando Guebuza to solve the crisis in Zimbabwe.
Rasmussen was speaking after a meeting with Guebuza, who is on the second day of a working visit to Denmark.
The Prime Minister encouraged Guebuza and the other leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to find a solution to the current impasses in Zimbabwe, and one which reflects the will of the Zimbabwean people.
"Mozambique is a neighbour of Zimbabwe, and President Guebuza is an influential political figure in Africa", said Rasmussen. "I encourage the President and the other SADC leaders to do their best to find solutions that reflect the will of the will of the Zimbabwean people".
Last Monday, Guebuza chaired a meeting of the SADC Organ on Political, Defence and Security Cooperation in Harare that tried, without success, to resolve the dispute between the ruling ZANU-PF and the Movement for Democratic change (MDC), which won the March elections, about the composition of a new government.
Despite the power-sharing agreement signed on 15 September, under the mediation of the then South African President Thabo Mbeki, there is still no sign that ZANU-PF is willing to share power in any meaningful way. The matter will now go before a full, emergency SADC heads of state summit.
