Liberia: Nimba Youth Scold Gov't & Local Authority

29 October 2008

Youth of Nimba County under the banner of the Federation of Nimba Youth and Student Organizations (FENYSO) have expressed surprise and disappointment over the manner and form in which authorities of Nimba and the Madam Sirleaf-led government have dismally and abysmally failed to develop a clear plan of how the Mittal Steel Fund of 1.5 million per each fiscal year for Nimba will be used to impact the lives of the citizens there.

In a statement, the Federation said such act is laying the basis for much needed development to get away from the people of Nimba who need human resource and infrastructural developments.

That besides, the group said also that it is disappointed in the superintendent of the county for his refusal to invite and afford them participation in major gatherings intended to shape the destiny of the county.

"This we believe is a symbolic representation of the Superintendent Kamei's leadership desire to continuously sideline and marginalize the youth and student communities of Nimba and project them erroneously as being unimportant," the statement read.

"We feel that is shameful that while Grand Bassa has already decided to use portion of her money for a community college amongst other important priorities, while Nimba is lagging behind."

The group said it would not sit and allow official neglect and the committee set up by President Sirleaf on the Mittal Fund to gamble with the developmental needs of our beloved county and people, but did not say what it would do, if they were not considered in process.

According to FENYSO it will be important that a definite decision be made on how the Nimba's portion of the Mittal Fund could be handled and used to benefit the county.

"In conclusion, FENYSO wants to use this medium to assure all that are going for the Tappita meeting that failure to reach a definite decision on the Mittal Fund's use, they will certainly have us to contend with as our patience has run totally low and we cannot wait any longer," it said.
