Liberia: Liberty Party Welcomes Reduction In Prices Of Petroleum Products

31 October 2008

Like most Liberians and institutions, the opposition Liberty Party is going with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as she observed her 70th natal day yesterday, extending warm felicitations and sincere best wishes to her, and wishing for her a renewed sense of commitment and dedication to the cause of nation-building, as we pursue new grounds for the security and economic wellbeing of our people.

At age 70, it said it is of the strong conviction that the president, with the endowment of God's gift of longevity, will use these moments for national reckoning so that she may leave with the nation a real legacy of peace, prosperity and national healing, at end of her tenure as president.

Meanwhile, the party said in a statement that it welcomed news that the Unity Party-led Government has affected reduction in the prices of petroleum products on the Liberian market. It said it believed that the intervention by the government is yet another proof of how much "we could achieve as a people, if we adopted a policy of heeding opposition voice."

According to the party, it holds the view that the strenuous economic situations in the country superimposed by acute prices of basic commodities have been a source of much discomfort for the vast majority of Liberians who do not have any source of income.

"This is why Liberty Party, as an alternative voice, has always engaged the government constructively, making recommendations that, in the contemplation of the party, presents a leeway for bringing the underprivileged out of the gnashing economic misery that they find themselves in," it said in the statement under the signature of its National Chairman Israel Akinsanya.

As a further step out of the imposing hardship being faced by our people, it said it implores the administration to reflect on yet another cardinal recommendation that the party has always advanced regarding the astounding hike in the price of the nation staple, rice.

"We believe that an intervention by the government in the direction of applying the Rice Stabilization Funds against the current price of rice, will substantially affect the rice market, thereby reduce the tension under which the average Liberian now live," the statement concluded as saying.
