Uganda: Tororo Pensioners Appeal for Assistance

Kampala — About 200 former civil servants in Tororo have not received their pension estimated at sh1.9b. Some of them say they have waited for their pension for 30 years but see no results.

The pensioners were, on Wednesday, meeting with Tororo resident district commissioner Mpimbaza Hashaka.

"You will be shocked to learn that I only received my pension package up to 1983," said the elderly Dastan Odol, the former treasurer of Bukedi, also chairperson of the pensioners who retired in 1975.

He regretted that many of his contemporaries in service have suffered the same fate and many have since died.

Tororo chief administrative officer Felix Osoku said under the restructuring policy of the Government, the issues of pension were vested in the hands of the public service ministry.

"The problem is not with the district but the ministry," he said.

Documents shown to Saturday Vision indicate that Osoku has been in touch with the ministry over the matter. His latest communication was in September 11.2008.

Hashaka appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene.
