Nigeria: Group Challenges Christians on Charity, Family Values

31 October 2008

The Holy Family Society, a group in the Catholic church, yesterday in Abuja urged Christians to cultivate the habit of helping the poor in their midst.

Mr David Osunde, the founder of the group, said this at a news conference to kick-start its five-day seminar and retreat. The theme of the event is "Make Saints Out of Families".

Osunde said: "since the poor will always live with us, we have to care for them in order to put smiles on their faces. This will go a long way to make the society a better place for all of us".

He said in line with the teachings of their faith, Christians should see it as their responsibility to always be their brothers' keepers.

Osunde said the group was committed to encouraging good upbringing of children in Christian homes and an improvement in the quality of life among Christians.

He added that the event was also an avenue to redirect parents on the need to uphold ideal family values.

"The family constitute the general public and every character that has been displayed in the society is as a result of family upbringing," he added.

Osunde said the family was strategic the efforts to curb social vices as armed robbery, prostitution, drug abuse and corruption.
