Uganda: Disgruntled NRM MPs in Liaison With FDC?

column

Kampala — ARE disgruntled NRM members working with the opposition FDC to undermine the ruling party? One rumour doing the rounds in the corridors of power says so. And another has it that the opposition is taking advantage of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) saga to divide NRM.

The rumour that a section of NRM MPs are allying with FDC to have security minister Amama Mbabazi and finance minister Ezra Suruma censured for influence-peddling is gaining currency. This comes in the wake of the NSSF report's recommendation that the two ministers resign or be fired for pressurising the Fund to purchase land in Temangalo.

Mbabazi, who is also NRM's secretary general, is linked to Arma Limited, which, along with city businessman Amos Nzeyi, cobbled 263 acres and sold it to the NSSF. Those who think the transaction was flawless see an FDC role in the move to censure Mbabazi over the issue.

The NRM members have reportedly been seen in night meetings with FDC officials, including non-legislators.

At one such meeting, FDC officials urged NRM to initiate a censure motion even before the report was out, promising to support them. But others think FDC is simply exploiting the division in NRM over the NSSF land deal.
