Uganda: Wenreco Given a Month to Improve

Kampala — ARUA District Council has given the West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECO) a grace period of one month to regularise its services or risk being thrown out of the region.

In a debate, the councillors complained that the company had, besides the incessant interruptions, failed to supply power for 18 hours a day as per its contract with the Government.

But WENRECO regional manager Fabian ahimbisibwe said the generator was no longer capable of marching the high demand.

"When we started, the machine was operating below capacity, but now we have over 1,500 clients so we have to load shed at peak hours," Ahimbisibwe said.

The councillors said despite being called a rural electrification company, WENRECO had exorbitant tariffs compared to UMEME.

They cited the standard sh12,595 service fee which WENRECO charges per month compared to sh2,000 paid in other regions.
