Uganda: Rakai Chief Arrested Over Assault

1 November 2008

Kampala — KYOTERA town council chairperson Charles Mande Lugumya told the Police that the town council treasurer, Robert Kasendwa had undermined him and referred to him as a mere ceremonial leader.

Lugumya was accused of assaulting Kasendwa during an executive committee meeting.

"Kasendwa has been provoking me for a long time and couldn't stand it any longer," Lugumya said, adding that Kasendwa had also declined to release money to pay Mande's salary and allowances.

But Kasendwa insisted there was no money and accused Lugumya of refusing to sign the town council budget. Kalisizo Grade I Magistrate Carol Kintu remanded Lugumya for two weeks after he failed to pay a sh600,000 cash bail.
