Uganda: Olympian Etolu Gets New Home

Kampala — PATRICK Etolu, a former high jump national record holder has re-located to a new home from a leaking grass thatched hut in Madera, Soroti district.

The 73-year-old Etolu, who represented the country at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, acquired the sh20m house as a gift from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Jacques Rogge.

Rogge, appaled by Etolu's living conditions following a visit to Kampala in January last year, offered to fund construction of the new house. Many Olympians including Etolu, who is struggling to earn a living, met Rogge.

In preparation for Rogge's visit, organizers had to buy Etolu a pair of shoes, a tie and clothes. Etolu's long standing high jump record of 2.3m remained unbeaten until 1999.
