At least 7 Gambian doctors, namely, Dr Charles Roberts, Dr Lamin Jaiteh, Dr. Ousman Sanyang, Dr. Alhagie Manneh, Dr Abdoulie Keita, Dr. Mustapha Bittaye and Dr. Abubakarr Jagne, yesterday evening, left Banjul for Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, where they are expected to pursue their postgraduate fellowship degree on surgery, medicine, obstetrics and Gynaecology. The program is expected to take them four years to complete.

Few hours before departure, the team of doctors were bade farewell at the conference room of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul.

Speaking at that ceremony, Professor Ousman Nyang, the Head of the School of Medicine and allied sciences, who also doubles as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia, said the doctors had undergone two years intensive training at the RVTH, after graduating from the University of The Gambia.

According to him, the training received by these doctors at the RVTH and the School of Medicine would help them immensely in their further studies. Professor Nyang advised them to live up to expectations.

For her part, Dr Mariatou Jallow, the chief medical director of RVTH, called on the departing doctors to focus on their studies, noting that sustainability of the medical school entirely depends on them as the pioneers. She commended the government of The Gambia and Taiwan for making this scholarship package a successful one.

Professor Ade of the laboratory unit of the RVTH urged the doctors to continue reading, and to ensure coming back and serve their country, after completing their studies. He further advised them to be steadfast in whatever they were doing, and to serve as worthy ambassadors of The Gambia.

Dr Charles Roberts, head of the team, on behalf of his colleges, thanked President Jammeh for the opportunity accorded them. He assured that they would excel in their studies.

Baboucarr Ngum, the public relations officer of the RVTH, chaired the ceremony.
