Nigeria: Glo-Lagos Half Marathon Gets Date On Tuesday

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and Globacom Limited, the title sponsor of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon will on Tuesday, November 4 unveil plans for the 2008 edition at a press conference.

The inaugural edition of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon held last December with over fifty international runners in attendance.

The organizers and the sponsor say the date and other aspects of the second edition of the competition will be made public at the press conference that will hold at the Mike Adenuga Towers, corporate headquarters of Globacom on Tuesday.

The last edition of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon featured interesting races like the Media Mock Marathon for Journalists and the Corporate Fun Run for companies, government agencies and small businesses. Sources close to the organizers and sponsor say the second edition will feature innovations in both categories.

Last year's top prize money for the male and female runners was $50, 000 respectively and while details of the innovation were not revealed, it was also learnt that this edition may come with bigger prize money and goody packs.

"The sponsor, Globacom was obviously impressed with the turn-out of international athletes for the last edition and it would want to sustain that turn-out with every incentive that can draw quality runners from every part of the globe", submitted the source.

Some of international elite athletes who registered for last year's came from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Eritrea. They include Yonas Kifles, Yared Asmeron, Dieudonné Disi (Rwanda), Tesfayohannes Mesfen (Eritrea), Debela Berhane Adere, Magarsa Askale Tafa (Ethiopia), Lineth Chepkirut , Alice Jemeli, Mary Keitany and Irene Kipchumba (Kenya). They were joined by the best of runners from Nigeria and Lagos residents who ran for fun and well-being. Rwanda's Dieudonne Disi won the star prize of $50, 000 dollars in the male category while Lineth Chepkirut of Kenya carted away the top prize in the female category. A total of $210, 000 (about N27m) was won across all categories in the first edition.
