Zimbabwe: Mtukudzi Up for Kora Award

1 November 2008

Oliver Mtukudzi's star keeps shining after he was nominated in two categories for the prestigious 2008 Kora All Africa Awards to be held in December.

Kora awards, regarded as the biggest musical event in Africa, are broadcast live to more than 700 million viewers in 82 countries worldwide.

Mtukudzi, who walked away with a Kora for best arrangement in 2002 for his song Ndakuvara and another Kora for Best African male artist and Lifetime Achievement Award in August 2003, was nominated this year for the best artist or group (southern Africa) and best arrangement for the song Chikara.

He will face 10 competitors from southern Africa including Namibian Gal level, South Africa's Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Zambian Mampi.

Mtukudzi stands a chance of winning a whopping US$1 million in the category of Best African Artist, southern Africa.

Mtukudzi is not the only Zimbabwean to be nominated for the awards this year as UK-based urban groover, Tawanda Sibotshiwe popularly known as Jusa Dementor, was also nominated for the best ragga artist or group of the year award.

Dementor is popularly known for the album Kukonzeresa that carries songs like Vangani.

The Kora awards, which return after a three-year absence, will be held in Calibar, Nigeria, on 6 December under the marketing slogan "One Billion viewers, One hundred countries, One hundred artists, One amazing prize, One million US dollars".

Other categories to be competed for are best hip-hop artist or group, best African video clip, best traditional artist or group and most promising artist, among others.

Founded in 1994 by Ernest Adjovi, the Kora Awards are given annually for music achievement in sub-Saharan Africa.
