Liberia: UL Administration Warns Students

1 November 2008

The administration of the University of Liberia has issued a warning to students of the university to desist from any activities that would impede academic work at the institution.

The Acting President of the university, Professor Ansu Sonii, who issued the warning on behalf of the university administration, challenged the student populace to take more interest in their academic activities because as he put it, the administration would not allow anyone or group of people to disrupt normal academic activities.

A statement issued yesterday under the signature of the Director of the UL Public Service said Professor Sonii spoke yesterday when the UL administration intervened in a long standing leadership crisis that had engulfed the Student Unification Party (SUP).

According to the statement, the party split into two factions following the expulsion of its Standard Bearer and Student Union President, Mr. Amos N. Tubor from the party by the central committee.

The statement said following series of consultative meetings with the Chairman of SUP, Mr. Marvelous Weah, leader of the break-way faction, Mr. Musa Dorley and SUP partisans, the Acting UL president declared that the UL administration recognizes only one SUP on the campus headed by its current Chairman, Mr. Marvelous Weah.

Professor Sonii, backed his assertion when he quoted several articles and section of the party's bye-laws and constitution.

He said the action of Mr. Dorley in creating a parallel SUP violates the party's constitution adding, "Live by the rules for the tranquility of the university. Nobody shall be allowed to disrupt the academic activities of the university."

The statement concluded that the Acting UL president presented the flag of SUP to Chairman Weah and urged him to take full responsibility of the party and plan a successful 38th anniversary celebration. He admonished Mr. Weah and Mr. Dorley to take personal responsibility for any act by SUP partisans that would disrupt the academic environment of the institution.
