Angola: Holy Scriptures Inspire Musician Caló Pascoal

3 November 2008

Luanda — To promote the gospel and the mysteries of the world, as reflected on the Bible, still does not seem to be a common focus among Angolan musicians, whose lyrics are mainly based on tradition, social critique and the daily living of Angolans.

Angolan singer and songwriter Caló Pascoal, a new generation music producer of reference in the country, is one of the very few musicians who "boldly" tries to propagate the mysterious teachings of the Bible, harmoniously combining his lyrics based on the Holy Scriptures and commercial rhythms.

Despite the profound value amd meaning of the biblical scriptures, religious and faith exaltation songs in Angola are mainly restricted to those who sing gospel and Afro-jazz music, a sort of closed circuit in which is very rarely seen the "intrusion" of commercial musicians.

Without actually moving away from themes inspired in the society, like the daily problems, love affairs and social struggles, the renowned musician has admitted that with this kind of songs he intends to call the attention of people as to the need to fear God and not having a lust for material things.

The artist, whose musical inspirations are musicians like Eduardo Paim (Angola), Dabs Lopes e Beto Dias (Cape Verde), said that it is possible to be successful with religious lyrics sung in styles like zouk, kizomba, semba, coladance and sungura.

"I do not make music just to sell a lot and make people dance. The important thing is to pass this christian message that I have been receiving. Renowned artists tend not to explore this side in their albums", Caló Pascoal emphasised.

Caló Pascoal, who explores different rhythms, has a music career that spans about nine years. He reflects his christian faith in his three solo albums so far released, namely Fé (Faith), Santa Mariazinha (Holy Little Mary) and Esperança Sagrada (Sacred Hope).

"My success is a work of God. Everything I do in thanks to the Lord. I sing to the world, but always thinking about evangelising" said the artist.

Caló Pascoal, who is also one of the country's main producers, started singing in a band called Necaf Brothers.

The musician released his latest album (Esperança Sagrada) last October 26.
