Uganda: Books to the Rescue at PLE

Many Primary Leaving Examination candidates across the country have Zain Uganda to thank for enabling them to prepare well for their examinations.

The final touches they had to do have been supported by the text books that Zain Uganda has donated to their schools.

Since 2006, when the Build Our Nation campaign was launched in the country Zain Uganda has donated some 27,000 books to over 100 primary schools across every district in Uganda. The books donated in partnership with the Ministry of Education are in the core subjects of English, Mathematics Social Studies and Science.

At Katwe Primary School, where the campaign was launched in 2006, the candidates are revising their notes and also using the books they received from Zain. "I have achieved a lot from these text books that Zain gave to our school. I have learnt a lot about different topics that from my personal reading. I thank Zain for the help and am sure that when the examinations come I will pass and will be in the first grade," said Florence Lawino, a P.7 pupil from the school.

She said that if possible Zain should return to the school and provide more books to the school. "When I was in P.6, I told the people from Zain, that I was going to read these books so that I can make it to P.7. I passed very well and came third in my class. The books have helped me to understand more of what we have learnt in the class. I am now reading hard and I know I will pass with a first grade too," another pupil Ivan Muluya explained.

The headmaster of the School Mr. Musa Mwima explains that the books seriously being used to for revision ahead of the final exams. "Our performance has been improving since we got these books, which shows that they are indeed helping in the teaching and learning process. While the pupils read these books, the teachers also often refer to them for their reference..." he said.

This is a similar experience for all the schools that Zain has visited with books as most they were just waiting for the books as a major option that would help to improve the quality of their education.

This year Zain visited other schools in the Karamoja Region as well as the Central region where at least each school per district received books to improve the quality of their education. These deliveries ended the second phase of the campaign. Zain will soon launch the third phase of this campaign which will see over 80 schools across all the districts of Uganda receiving assorted text books as well as other scholastic materials.

'Since we launched the Build Our Nation Campaign, we have seen improvement in the performance of the schools that we have visited with books. We continue to encourage the pupils to use these books because in them lies their future... we have no doubt that all the candidates who have used these books have higher chances of getting better grades in the final examinations, said Justina Ntabgoba-Kayemba Zain's Social Responsibility Manager

Zain is the leading corporate supporter of Uganda's Education contributing significantly towards the achievement of the second Millenium development goal- to see that all young boys and girls achieve universal primary Education by 2015.
