Monrovia — The government of Libya has provided about 30 tons of rice to Liberia.

Presenting the rice to the Liberian government over the weekend at the Roberts International Airport in Margibi County, the Charge d'Affaires of the Libyan People's Bureau in Liberia, Aymen T.A. Shah said the donation was his government way of identifying with Liberia in the wake of global food crisis.

Mr. Shah said "everybody knows about the international food crisis that is affecting our world; as brothers and sisters of Liberia, we decided to assist the people of Liberia to help stabilize the food crisis in the country."

He acknowledged that rice cannot solve all of the food crises in the country, but hoped it would greatly help in the process of ensuring food availability on the Liberian market.

The Libyan envoy assured the people of Liberia of his government's continuous support as they strive to rebuild their nation.

He commended the Liberian government for the level of cooperation his embassy is receiving in the discharge of its duty.

In response, Deputy Foreign Minister for Administration Johnson N. Gwaikolo who received the rice on behalf of the Liberian government commended the government and people of Libya for the donation.

Deputy Minister Gwaikolo said the donation came at a time when the need for rice in the country is very high, adding "this rice could not have come at a better time than now; this gesture will certainly be remembered."

He recalled that the provision of rice is not Libya's first donation to this government, saying "some time ago, you donated generators to help us in the provision of electricity to our people; you also donated several tractors to support government's food security; recently, you provided several medical supplies to Liberia; for all of this we extend our deepest appreciation to your leader and people of Libya."

The rice was later turned over to the Liberia Produce and Marketing Corporation.
