Maputo — Mozambique's publicly owned electricity company, EDM, linked on Friday the sugar town of Marromeu, on the south bank of the Zambezi, to the national grid.
According to a press release received by AIM, besides the new grid connection, EDM also erected 300 public illumination posts in the same town.
The project, budgeted at six million dollars, was jointly funded by the German Government, through its Development Bank KFW, and EDM itself.
"The inauguration of the new network will promote and boost socio-economic activities at the local level, particularly at the Sena Sugar Company, a private sugar mill currently employing about 8000 people," states the document.
Also, availability of electricity in the region will play a major role in improving the quality of services rendered to the local residents, such as education and health care during the evenings.
